Graduate Internships

Graduate Internships in Visual Arts offer students valuable practical experience at a range of arts and cultural institutions. Internships have provided students with skills related to educational programming, curation, exhibition research and design, promotion and publicity, festival and exhibition planning, professional writing and editing, auction practices, collections management, fundraising, catalogue preparation, artist support, website design, archival practices, and innovations in display strategies.

Placements may be in person or remote, local or farther afield. Worth a half course (0.5 credits), these internships are available to graduate students (MA, MFA, and PhD) in all streams of our program: art history, curatorial, and studio. Normally, students are only allowed to do one internship during their degree.

Recent placements have included:

Embassy Cultural House
Femme Art Review
Forest City Gallery
Forest City Film Festival
Gardiner Auctions
Guelph Arts Council
McIntosh Gallery
Museum London
Museum of Ontario Archaeology
OCAD University Faculty Curriculum Development Centre
Partners in Art
Royal Ontario Museum

Graduate students interested in an internship must complete the application form at the link above by August 1. The deadline shifts slightly yearly, the Graduate Chair will email all grads with a slate of internship options and provide a deadline.

It is recommended that you apply for more than one position. You must indicate your order of preference on the form.

Applications must include a CV plus a cover letter addressed to the institution(s) you are applying to. Each position you are applying for should get its own letter. The cover letter can be brief (1 page max.), it’s just a way to introduce yourself, say a bit about your existing expertise and research interests, and outline what skills you are hoping to acquire through an internship.

Once the applications have been received, the Graduate Chair will send the materials to the participating institutions. They will contact you directly for interviews. It is up to each institution to choose who they want as grad intern and therefore not all applicants are guaranteed an internship.
